Life is a Journey. Travel Safely.
We like to travel, when we can. With a preference for days on warm beaches, we do like to have an “adventure” and get away as often as we can. Here is a small selection of our adventures.
Yacht in the Morning Mist over Lake Geneva

A lone yacht sailing off into the morning mist over Lake Geneva. It seems very lonely, all on its own on the water. Curiosity steps in though. Where is it going, who is on board? Love to be on that yacht.
In September 2018, on our first full day in Switzerland, we visited Montreux. As we visited Lake Geneva a number of times while we were in Switzerland, we learned that mist in the morning is not uncommon. I just liked the picture of the lone yacht.

Ballito Morning

The sun is still below the horizon but it is lighting up the clouds to announce that it is about to burst out of the sea.

In April of 2022 we took a trip to Ballito on KwaZulu Natal’s Dolphin Coast. Our timing was terrible. We arrived for the aftermath of massive storms and floods, resulting in messy beaches, water supply problems and the like. Fortunately we had a top floor apartment at Ballito Manor, with a great view of the sea, directly over Willard Beach.
Getting up early gave me a chance to grab these two photos, and enjoy the start of the day with this view.

Golden Ballito Sunrise

The Easter holiday of 2022 was one to remember, especially for those who witnessed the breathtaking golden sunrise at Willard Beach in Ballito, South Africa. This picturesque beach located on the Dolphin Coast of KwaZulu-Natal is a popular destination among locals and tourists alike, and for good reason.
On this particular day, the beach was awash with vibrant hues of orange and yellow as the sun rose over the horizon. The sand glimmered under the first rays of sunlight, and the waves danced in a tranquil rhythm, creating a serene atmosphere. The stunning scenery was further complemented by the cool sea breeze, which provided a refreshing break from the warm sun.
A nice break, though this trip was marred by the once-in-century storms which decimated the coast. Nevertheless there are worse places to be after such a bad weather event.
Willard Beach is generally a great place for a holday break. The beach is clean, safe, and has a range of facilities that cater to visitors’ needs. The surrounding area is also full of attractions, including restaurants, cafes, and shops. Visitors can enjoy a range of water sports, including surfing, swimming, and fishing, or simply relax and soak up the sun on the sandy shores.
In addition to its natural beauty and range of activities, Willard Beach is also known for its friendly and welcoming community. Whether you are traveling alone, with friends or family, you will always find someone to share in the experience with.

Boats in a Line in Tenby Harbour

Tenby Harbour is a picturesque location that’s well-known for its colourful boats lined up against the backdrop of the town. The image of the colourful boats in a line with the soft hues of the town in the background is simply stunning, and it’s no wonder that it’s a favourite subject for photographers.
As you look at this photo, you can’t help but be mesmerised by the beautiful contrast of the colourful boats against the soft colours of the town. The bright, bold colours of the boats stand out against the muted shades of the town, creating a beautiful balance of colours that’s pleasing to the eye. The boats themselves are fascinating, each one painted in its own unique shade, with bright yellows, blues, greens, and reds all vying for attention.
The blue sky with streaks of light morning cloud adds another element of interest to the photo. It creates a beautiful background that complements the colours of the boats and town perfectly. The sky gives the photo a sense of depth and helps to create a feeling of calm and tranquillity, making it the perfect photo to look at when you want to unwind.
Tenby is an historic town tracing it’s beginnings to the 10th century. During the 12th and 13th centuries a castle was built and the town walled. Some of these walls still stand. The Victorians made the town popular as a seaside resort, which it remains today.

Pink Sunrise over Portimão

Pink Sunrise over Portimão is a breathtaking spectacle that should not be missed by anyone visiting the Praia da Rocha in Portimão, Algarve, Portugal. The sunrise light reflects in the sea, casting a warm pink and orange glow over the entire beach. It is a truly mesmerizing sight that sets the tone for a day of adventure and exploration.
Visiting the Praia da Rocha in November is the perfect time to witness this incredible sunrise. The late sunrise makes it easy to capture the beauty of this moment, as it rises slowly over the horizon. This is in contrast to the summer months when the sun rises earlier and is harder to capture in its full glory.
The Praia da Rocha is a stunning beach with golden sand and clear blue waters. It is surrounded by cliffs and rocky outcroppings that provide a dramatic backdrop for the sunrise. The beach is also surrounded by restaurants, bars, and cafes, making it the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee or a light breakfast as the sun rises.
In addition to the pink sunrise, there are many other reasons to visit the Praia da Rocha. The beach is a popular spot for water sports, including surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. The clear blue waters make it an ideal place for snorkelling and diving, where you can see a variety of marine life, including colourful fish and unique rock formations.
In conclusion, the Pink Sunrise over Portimão is a must-see experience for anyone visiting the Algarve, Portugal. Whether you are an avid photographer or simply appreciate the beauty of nature, this sunrise will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime. So, plan your beach holiday in November and witness this breathtaking spectacle for yourself.

A Sea of Masts in Torquay

Sea of Masts in Torquay
Looking at Torquay through a sea of masts.
All the boats, ready and waiting for summer crowds.
Taken during an October getaway to the Devon coast.
We stayed at a great little cottage on the hills above Teignmouth, but had to take some time out to explore the coast. Torquay was fun.

Kudu in Hwange

While cleaning up my photo archives, I came across a few scans of some old photos, taken in the Hwange National Park. These are a pair of Kudu Bulls at Big Tom’s Pan in the Robins Camp area of the park.
Situated in the south west of Zimbabwe, Hwange is Zimbabwe’s largest national park. It is accessible from the main Bulawayo – Victoria Falls road. Near the park at Hwange Safari Lodge, and in the park at Main Camp are facilities for tourists, though the park has other camps for the more intrepid traveller. (See Wikipedia entry for Hwange)
Living in Zimbabwe, it is common to load up the bakkie (light truck) and head for bush areas for a great few days away. Our own “hunting grounds” tended to be more to the north, however a trip to Hwange was always fun. Our chosen destination was the Robins Camp area, well away from the main tourist zones.
The park provides a number of waterholes, fed by boreholes, with viewing platforms. These pictures are from one such waterhole, known as Big Toms Pan, taken on a trip to Robins Camp in 1992. It’s a great way to spend a day, just watching the game coming down to drink.
There is a bit of a photography story to these photos. At that time film could be hard to get and sometimes expensive. At the last moment before leaving town I bought some cheap film. Now temperatures at Hwange can easily get above 40C in the car. All of the last minute film was damaged by heat! Not a problem I have seen with digital! As a result all of the colour was off. Years later the solution was to scan them and render them in black and white.

Sunrise on Sandown Beach Isle of Wight

Sunrise on the beach at Sandown on the Isle of Wight. I took an early morning walk to the beach to catch the sunrise, with some interesting clouds in the sky.
The sun is just appearing over the horizon and reflecting off the beach.
Sandown Bay is well protected and is often used by ships waiting to sail into the Solent to Southampton or Portsmouth. This ship made a great silhouette sitting on the horizon.

Isle of Wight, Brook Bay

As we come out of lockdown and look to having holidays again, one option is to stay home until the whole overseas travel confusion clears up. For us it is a matter of looking at paerts of the UK we haven’t seen, or, perhaps, continuing explorations from previous trips.
Back in 2014 we had an excellent week visiting the Isle of Wight. This is one little excerpt from that trip (rewrite and re-post of the post from 2014).
Staying in Sandown on the Isle of Wight, we decided to visit the Needles. But it’s far more fun to do it the hard way and drive the coastal roads. Driving along we came to a pretty little spot called Brook Bay, home to Brook Beach.
A pretty Sandy beach, Brook Beach is a popular summer spot with surfers, but is also well known to fossil collectors. Near Hanover point, visible at low tide is a fossilised forest with dinosaur footprints embedded in the sandstone. Definitely a spot for my summer visit list.

At one point we spotted this cottage. Put the view and the cottage together and that really is a place I could live.
October in the Isle of Wight, like most of the UK, is always going to offer variable weather. From a travel photographer’s point of view, you are there, and conditions are what they are, so just look for the shots. I would have liked to explore this beach a bit more, but it was cold and windy and not great to be out in that spot. The view along the coast could not be ignored, with it’s ruggedness and distant chalk cliffs. We had to stop and grab the photos, which would look fantastic on a sunny summer day.
