We like to travel, when we can. With a preference for days on warm beaches, we do like to have an “adventure” and get away as often as we can. Here is a small selection of our adventures.

Shipley Wharf Canal View

Shipley Wharf on the Leeds - Liverpool Canal
A timeless view along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Shipley Wharf.

A photo taken in 2016. A view of Shipley Wharf, on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, looking towards Liverpool.

Two centuries ago the canal was in use. This view would have looked very similar, though the sky would likely have been full of the smoke from the factory chimneys. The narrow boats would have been cargo carriers, pulled by horses, unlike the leisure vessels in the photo.

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal

The canal was constructed in stages between 1770 and 1816, to move goods and merchandise between the factories and the harbour at Liverpool. Crossing the Pennines it required some innovative engineering. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is the longest single company canal in the UK, at 127 miles (204 km) in length.

Modern Day Use

Like most canals in modern day UK, the Leeds and Liverpool is manged by the Canal and River Trust. It is used for leisure boating, mainly by narrow boats, but also by other boats and canoes.

Yacht in the Morning Mist over Lake Geneva

A yacht sailing into the mists over Lake Geneva.

A lone yacht sailing off into the morning mist over Lake Geneva. It seems very lonely, all on its own on the water. Curiosity steps in though. Where is it going, who is on board? Love to be on that yacht.

In September 2018, on our first full day in Switzerland, we visited Montreux. As we visited Lake Geneva a number of times while we were in Switzerland, we learned that mist in the morning is not uncommon. I just liked the picture of the lone yacht.

This is a rewrite of an earlier post from 2021 containing this image.

Ballito Morning

Sunrise cloudscape over the sea in Ballito, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.
The sun is still below the horizon but it is lighting up the clouds to announce that it is about to burst out of the sea.
And here is the sun popping up out of the sea.

In April of 2022 we took a trip to Ballito on KwaZulu Natal’s Dolphin Coast. Our timing was terrible. We arrived for the aftermath of massive storms and floods, resulting in messy beaches, water supply problems and the like. Fortunately we had a top floor apartment at Ballito Manor, with a great view of the sea, directly over Willard Beach.

Getting up early gave me a chance to grab these two photos, and enjoy the start of the day with this view.

Captivating Morning Hues: The Enchanting Colors of Boats in Tenby Harbor

Tenby colours. The many colours of the buildings contrast with the colours of the boats in the harbour.

Introduction:

Tenby, a picturesque coastal town nestled on the rugged Welsh coastline, boasts a vibrant and bustling harbor that comes alive each morning with a breathtaking display of colors. As the sun begins to rise, casting its gentle glow over the tranquil waters, the boats in Tenby Harbor emerge like vibrant brushstrokes on a canvas, painting the scene with an array of mesmerizing colors. This delightful sight never fails to captivate locals and visitors alike, leaving a lasting impression of the town’s timeless charm and beauty.

A Palette of Vibrancy:

As the first rays of sunlight kiss the harbor, the boats appear as if from a dream, each one adorned in its unique combination of colors. From vibrant reds and blues to soft pastels and striking yellows, the kaleidoscope of hues creates a truly mesmerizing spectacle. It is as if an artist has meticulously hand-painted each vessel, ensuring that no two boats are alike. Against the backdrop of the deep blue sea, the contrasting colors form a stunning contrast, evoking a sense of joy and wonder.

Harmony with Nature: The harmonious blend of boat colors is not only visually appealing but also in perfect harmony with the surrounding natural beauty. The azure sky mirrors the tranquil sea, while the distant cliffs and verdant hills provide a picturesque backdrop. The boats, with their cheerful hues, seem to enhance this natural palette, adding an extra layer of charm to the coastal scenery. The scene becomes a symphony of color and serenity, where man-made artistry and nature seamlessly coexist.

A Glimpse into Tenby’s Heritage: Beyond their aesthetic appeal, the colorful boats in Tenby Harbor bear testament to the town’s rich maritime heritage. They are not merely vessels for leisure and recreation but a reflection of the town’s seafaring past. The boats, with their distinct liveries and patterns, are a nod to the fishing and trading traditions that have shaped Tenby’s identity throughout the ages. They stand as reminders of the town’s resilience, evolving from a bustling port to a vibrant tourist destination while still cherishing its roots.

Conclusion:

The morning colors of the boats in Tenby Harbor offer a glimpse into the enchanting tapestry of this coastal town. As the sun illuminates the sky, the vibrant hues of these vessels transform the harbor into a living work of art. The visual symphony of colors, in harmony with the surrounding natural beauty, creates a scene that is both captivating and unforgettable. This beautiful display not only delights the senses but also pays homage to Tenby’s maritime heritage, encapsulating the town’s timeless charm. A visit to Tenby Harbor in the early morning hours is an experience that lingers in the heart, leaving a lasting impression of the town’s magical allure.

Golden Ballito Sunrise

The Easter holiday of 2022 was one to remember, especially for those who witnessed the breathtaking golden sunrise at Willard Beach in Ballito, South Africa. This picturesque beach located on the Dolphin Coast of KwaZulu-Natal is a popular destination among locals and tourists alike, and for good reason.

On this particular day, the beach was awash with vibrant hues of orange and yellow as the sun rose over the horizon. The sand glimmered under the first rays of sunlight, and the waves danced in a tranquil rhythm, creating a serene atmosphere. The stunning scenery was further complemented by the cool sea breeze, which provided a refreshing break from the warm sun.

A nice break, though this trip was marred by the once-in-century storms which decimated the coast. Nevertheless there are worse places to be after such a bad weather event.

Willard Beach is generally a great place for a holday break. The beach is clean, safe, and has a range of facilities that cater to visitors’ needs. The surrounding area is also full of attractions, including restaurants, cafes, and shops. Visitors can enjoy a range of water sports, including surfing, swimming, and fishing, or simply relax and soak up the sun on the sandy shores.

In addition to its natural beauty and range of activities, Willard Beach is also known for its friendly and welcoming community. Whether you are traveling alone, with friends or family, you will always find someone to share in the experience with.

Boats in a Line in Tenby Harbour

Colourful boats in a line in Tenby Harbour contrasting with the colours of the buildings.

Tenby Harbour is a picturesque location that’s well-known for its colourful boats lined up against the backdrop of the town. The image of the colourful boats in a line with the soft hues of the town in the background is simply stunning, and it’s no wonder that it’s a favourite subject for photographers.

As you look at this photo, you can’t help but be mesmerised by the beautiful contrast of the colourful boats against the soft colours of the town. The bright, bold colours of the boats stand out against the muted shades of the town, creating a beautiful balance of colours that’s pleasing to the eye. The boats themselves are fascinating, each one painted in its own unique shade, with bright yellows, blues, greens, and reds all vying for attention.

The blue sky with streaks of light morning cloud adds another element of interest to the photo. It creates a beautiful background that complements the colours of the boats and town perfectly. The sky gives the photo a sense of depth and helps to create a feeling of calm and tranquillity, making it the perfect photo to look at when you want to unwind.

Tenby is an historic town tracing it’s beginnings to the 10th century. During the 12th and 13th centuries a castle was built and the town walled. Some of these walls still stand. The Victorians made the town popular as a seaside resort, which it remains today.

Kudu in Hwange

A pair of Kudu bulls with some nice horns at Big Tom’s Pan waterhole in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. This is an old scan which was in my library. The original colour negative was shot “in the wild” in 1992 on a trip to Hwange’s Robins Camp.

While cleaning up my photo archives, I came across a few scans of some old photos, taken in the Hwange National Park. These are a pair of Kudu Bulls at Big Tom’s Pan in the Robins Camp area of the park.

Situated in the south west of Zimbabwe, Hwange is Zimbabwe’s largest national park. It is accessible from the main Bulawayo – Victoria Falls road. Near the park at Hwange Safari Lodge, and in the park at Main Camp are facilities for tourists, though the park has other camps for the more intrepid traveller. (See Wikipedia entry for Hwange)

Living in Zimbabwe, it is common to load up the bakkie (light truck) and head for bush areas for a great few days away. Our own “hunting grounds” tended to be more to the north, however a trip to Hwange was always fun. Our chosen destination was the Robins Camp area, well away from the main tourist zones.

The park provides a number of waterholes, fed by boreholes, with viewing platforms. These pictures are from one such waterhole, known as Big Toms Pan, taken on a trip to Robins Camp in 1992. It’s a great way to spend a day, just watching the game coming down to drink.

There is a bit of a photography story to these photos. At that time film could be hard to get and sometimes expensive. At the last moment before leaving town I bought some cheap film. Now temperatures at Hwange can easily get above 40C in the car. All of the last minute film was damaged by heat! Not a problem I have seen with digital! As a result all of the colour was off. Years later the solution was to scan them and render them in black and white.

NOTE: A revised and corrected version of an old post.

Sunrise on Sandown Beach Isle of Wight

Sunrise on the beach at Sandown on the Isle of Wight. I took an early morning walk to the beach to catch the sunrise, with some interesting clouds in the sky.

The sun is just appearing over the horizon and reflecting off the beach.

Sandown Bay is well protected and is often used by ships waiting to sail into the Solent to Southampton or Portsmouth. This ship made a great silhouette sitting on the horizon.
